What is biodiversity and its importance?
What does biodiversity mean?
Biodiversity: According to the definition given by Hamilton “Bio-diversity is the variety of Life.” All kinds of diversity in living things is called biodiversity. That is, the diversity (genetic, habitat, species or variation) of all types of organisms living on the earth's surface, in space and in freshwater and marine water bodies is called biodiversity. Simply put, all types of diversity of animals present in the world is called biodiversity.
What is the meaning of Biological hotpot?
Hotspots: Areas rich in biodiversity on Earth are called hotspots. There are 24 biodiversity hotspots in the world. Hotspots are identified based on two factors, namely:
1. The number of endemic species (i.e. species found nowhere else in the world except in certain regions) in an ecosystem.
2. Level of destructive activity on ecosystems.
Although the combined area of the hotspots is only 2% of the total land surface, there is an incredible combination of biodiversity here. 40% of all land animals live here. About 25% of terrestrial vertebrates are endemic here. These hotspots are home to 50-60% of biodiversity. Bangladesh belongs to the Indo-Burma hotspot.
What is the Earth Summit? Write the principles of this convention.
Earth summit: On June 5, 1992, the best ever conference of the heads of government of 170 countries of the world was held in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Here the Agenda-21 resolution was adopted. This conference on the environment is called Earth summit
The highlights of Agenda-21 were: best-ever
1. Alleviating poverty, protecting health, providing housing, and improving the environment for the sake of global social and economic development;
2. Prevention of desertification under resource management and conservation for the purpose of development, preservation of biodiversity, creation of pollution-free environment using environmentally friendly biotechnology; And
3. Playing a strong role in the development of the entire human group including the tribal.
What is meant by endangered, vulnerable, and rare species?
Endangered, vulnerable, and rare species are defined below:
Endangered species: Those species with a small number of members that are currently surviving in a vulnerable state in a hostile environment and whose causes are active for their destruction and which are threatened with extinction soon if not removed on an urgent basis are called endangered species.
Vulnerable species: Those species which are not currently endangered but may become endangered in the near future if adverse factors continue to operate are called vulnerable species.
Rare species: Those species which are not now endangered or vulnerable but are in a very vulnerable condition due to their scarcity are called rare species.
Conclusion:
The term "biodiversity" lacks a universal definition. The typical context in which it is used emphasizes the importance of paying attention to our living environment and the sustainable use of natural resources. The different types of biodiversity include habitat, species, and genetic diversity. The integrated strategy employed in coastal zone management is a suitable approach for addressing the issue of biodiversity. They emphasize the importance of sustainable development and the prudent exploitation of coastal resources. The concepts of biodiversity loss and biodiversity conservation form the cornerstone of biodiversity management. The management of biodiversity is a complicated issue that necessitates the participation of a wide range of partners, including governmental organizations, private businesses, non-governmental organizations, and volunteers. Putting that aside, commitment, laws, and enforcement at the national and international levels provide a crucial framework for promoting and preserving biodiversity.
